Thank you for the follow-up on this bug report. My log indicates that
problems relating to xserver files were still evident in May, 2013. At
this point, I abandoned Ubuntu and switched to Linux Mint. Despite Mint
being a variant of Ubuntu, this OS does not have the same issues with the
video system. Thus my issue has effectively been resolved.

Title:
Update to xserver files causes failure to boot

Status in “xorg-server” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  Updates to xserver-common and/or xserver-xorg-core currently available
in Update Manager result in a failure to boot. The display screen
remains completely black and no further action seems possible.

By a process of elimination, all other updates received over the past
few days having been installed successfully, the problem has been
identified as the two noted files.

These are now (25-Mar-12) the sole remaining updates; however,
installing them causes the failure to boot condition. The problem is
repeatable once a prior disk partition image has been restored.

  Description: Ubuntu 10.04.4 LTS
  Release: 10.04

the xserver files (i.e. versions of the software that do allow the
