I am using an AMD Radeon 6790 Graphics card and I have had generally similar problems wjhen using previous versions of Ubuntu or other linux distributions when attempting to use the open source radeon drivers. From reading the Feature Matrix on the Xorg website, it seems there should be support with working KMS and 3d acceleration for this graphics card now: http://xorg.freedesktop.org/wiki/RadeonFeature I am not sure where to begin trying to get more information to assist further in debugging this problem, once it gets to the black screen, there is nothing I can do other than reboot.
