Blempis, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any
activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If
so, could you please test for this with the latest development release
of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com
/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in
the development release from a Terminal
(Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather
and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p xserver-xorg-video-nouveau REPLACE-WITH-BUG-NUMBER

Please note, given that the information from the prior release is
already available, doing this on a release prior to the development one
would not be helpful.

Thank you for your understanding.

Title:
  Xorg freeze

Status in “xserver-xorg-video-nouveau” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
First of all, sorry that the given information is little bit
missleading, but I didn't have a change to report properly because
  several reasons.

However, I still believe I can give you enough information what it the
problem, why it is crucial to fix it and what kind of users fill encounter this
problem so that you can give them a out of box user experience.

So, the main problem at hand is as follows:

It is not possible to install or upgrade on this system you collected
information from This includes upgrading from 10.04 to 12.04 and the
fresh installation of 12.04 , 12.04.1 and 12.10. (Well, perhaps one
could say that upgrade succeeded, but the new system got frozen.)
OpenSuse 12.2 installed succesfully but only the offered safe mode
  worked.

One crucial thing to note is that this problem at hand is clearly
invisible to your current bug monitoring system/method. Launhcpad
involves more than 100 000 bugs so you have hard time even to follow
it. So, it seems that you don't get data when something goes terribly
wrong in upgrades and fresh installs, do you?

I do have a Android phone (Samsung Galaxy Gio) and I use it all the
time when connecting my desktop to internet. I don't have any other
device modem what so ever for that purpose. I don't know if this
relevant from the point of solving this issue but considered it is
  worth reporting separately.

The problem is related to Nvidia Gtx 580. Installing Ubuntu 12.10 leads to
crash. It happens when I try to select language. Then the system reports about
pfipo goes into loop trying to recover but failing and it gives some magnified
parts of the previous installing screen. Those parts are not in any order. The
screen is not readable and mouse hangs.

  Solution?

Installing nvidia packets by apt would be fine but that option is not
available. It is possible to get the livemode if the preferred
language is not selected rather than just pressing enter. However,
live mode is not working while mouse is not responsing nor is keybord.

How the heck did I manage to install Ubuntu 12.04 to this darn
  machine?!

Well, after that explanation you and I share the most well deserved
  feeling of ashame.

First I changed back my old work horse Gts 250 and installed the 12.04. Then
I installed offered drivers for that and rebooted. After that (as I rememer it
right) I downloaded drivers suitable for Gtx 580 and shut down the machine.
Removed Gts 250 and replaced the Gtx 580 to the system and the system finally
booted as it should.

  Your part of solution:

Make sure that the command line is available even before Ubuntu
desktops starts up. Also make sure that the system can find internet
and use apt-sources even if there is no modem available. Some of us
  use Androids.
