The desktop freezes to that there is no way out except by switching off the computer. I then installed the proprietary Nvidia driver thru the Ubuntu Softare Center, and have solved the problem. I think that the upgrade tool should check that the computer has a Nvidia card and install its driver instead of installing the default one.
