This is unlikely to be the cause of the problem. It looks like
pulseaudio attempts all possible configurations for devices when loading
them to find out which ones work.
I've noticed that I get the same "floating point exception" when
attempting to use the a52 plugin without pulseaudio running at all
("pulse" device in this list is the alsa plugin that is configured by
default, not actually part of pusleaudio).

This problem seems to be caused in ALSA or the plugins package, but I don't
know how to diagnose it any further.

Title:
ac-53 (a52 plugin) core dumps
Status in “pulseaudio” package in Ubuntu:
Confirmed
Bug description:
This config worked on 13.04
a52.conf:
pcm.a52 {
@args [CARD]
@args.CARD {
type string
}
type rate
slave {
pcm {
type a52
bitrate 448
channels 6
card $CARD
}
# rate 48000 #required somehow, otherwise nothing happens in PulseAudio
}
}
commenting out rate 48000 allows it to work, but stereo only; no
surround.
