I can confirm this. nVidia GT 520 here. Same version of system, KDE and drivers.
It happened today for the first time. I'm using Kubuntu 13.10 for a couple of weeks now but I didn't experience the problem until today. Kubuntu 13.04 + KDE 4.11 from backports PPA didn't have this problem. It seems it is triggered by multiple enables/disables of compositing. I also experience some crashes and freezes of LibreOffice that trace back to Qt libraries so it made me believe that the problem is caused by incompatibilities of Qt libraries and nVidia drivers. Now that you mention that Chrome (GTK) is also affected, I suspect that nVidia driver is the sole suspect. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to nvidia-graphics-drivers-319-updates in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1259692 Title: sometimes windows turn black Status in “nvidia-graphics-drivers-319-updates” package in Ubuntu: New Bug description: Kubuntu 13.10, KDE 4.11.3, NVidia 9300 with 319-updates (319.60) drivers. Occasionally windows are completely black. Maximizing/minimizing them usually gets them back to normal. I'm not sure if it's related, but Chrome sometimes freezes (but not drawn black) and also returns to normal after minimize/maximize. These only happen when desktop effects are enabled.
