Indeed, I can't reproduce the issue with 13.10 (which also has an emacs 24.3). I guess this was somehow fixed between 24.2 and 24.3. Thanks for the feedback anyway.

Disabling user init file with -q doesn't help. The issue only concerns auctex and emacs 24: emacs 23 is perfectly fine, as well as default TeX mode in emacs24.
