Title:
  network manager icon disappeared

Status in “network-manager-applet” package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
Network manager icon disappeared. Cannot put it back.

  Cannot report nm-applet as ubuntu-bug.
Apport says: "Package nm-applet does not exist"

  Yet:

  ps -eaf | grep nm-applet
  mark 7332 7283 0 09:07 pts/3 00:00:00 grep --color=auto nm-applet

However, putting filter "nm-applet" into KSystemLog app produces no
  results.

Cannot report network-manager-applet as ubuntu-bug either.
Apport says: "Package network-manager-applet does not exist"

  Yet:

  ps -eaf | grep network-manager-applet
  mark 7458 7410 0 09:09 pts/5 00:00:00 /bin/sh -e
/usr/bin/ubuntu-bug network-manager-applet
  mark 7463 7458 0 09:09 pts/5 00:00:02 /usr/bin/python3
/usr/share/apport/apport-gtk network-manager-applet
  mark 7492 7283 0 09:14 pts/3 00:00:00 grep --color=auto
network-manager-applet

Similarly, putting "network-manager-applet" into KSystemLog produces
  no results.

I therefore had to report this as a network-manager bug.

NetworkManager

The forums are bereft of good fixes for this bug. The standard remedy
appears to be, remove the Notification Area from the Panel and then
replace it again. I did this. The network manager did not reappear.

It is notable, as a user, that the network manager does not appear as
one of the applications you can select in Panel preferences. Is it
there normally? Or has it disappeared from the options because of the
crash? It would be a serious omission if it is not normally there: it
is an excellent and vital application. Users cannot do without it. Yet
it seems they often have trouble with it disappearing. Stands to
reason that something ought to be done urgently to make it a lot
easier to get it going again if there are any problems.

One thing that did happen when I removed the Notification Area from
the Panel and then replace it again was that the dozen-or-so
applications that were listed in the Notification Area preferences
disappeared. I don't know if this is related to a system restart/new
session (in an attempt to recover the network manager) and apps being
  cleared from memory.
