Title:
[Karmic] Resume on Thinkpad W500 frequently fails

Status in AMD fglrx video driver:
  New
Status in “pm-utils” package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: pm-utils

Resume works very unreliably on my Thinkpad W500, using 64-bit Ubuntu
9.10 (Karmic) with all updates installed. Hibernate and suspend run
without problems, but the screen remains dark after resume. During the
resume process, a small white cursor is blinking for a short time.
After a few seconds, the screen becomes dark. No reaction to keyboard
input any more -> system needs reset by using the power button.
However, the system in background seems to work; some harddisk
activity can be observed and the log (see below) entry states that the
  resume process has been completed.

I am using the fglrx driver (provided by jockey-kde). Unfortunately,
the system only works usefully with this driver - the Open Source
driver still has a lot of limitations.

For debugging, I have set PM_DEBUG="true" in /usr/lib/pm-
utils/defaults. The resulting /var/log/pm-suspend.log is attached to
this bug report. One of the failed resumes is on Wed Nov 4 20:04:19
CET 2009. It seems that the resume works properly but the ATI card
fails to bring back the display. I have also tried to suspend and
resume the system from the console by calling "sudo pm-suspend" ->
  same problem.

The problem seems to occur more likely when the system is suspended
when running from battery and resumed when connected to the AC power
  supply.
