Blank screen with cursor in left top corner after: init 1

Bug description:
After calling `init 1` I see the ubuntu logo with the five dots. They
cicle through and the screen disapears to become black with a non
blinking cursor in the top left corner.
here it stops and nothing happens.
when I press CTRL-ALT-DEL, an window appers, which tells me:
The system is running in low-graphics mode
Your screen, graphics car and input device settings could not be detected
correctly. You will need to configure these yourself.
After some seconds it reboots.
