Title:
display crashes leaving me in "low-resolution" mode

Status in “xorg-server” package in Ubuntu:
  Expired

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: xorg

This seems to happen consistently when I am viewing the
xscreensaver-demo and clicking through the screensavers available. My
monitor flickers for a moment and then changes to a text-only mode.
This mode states that I am now in a low resolution mode and the system
cannot find information about my graphics card and/or monitor, and
recommends that I manually configure. It provides checkbox options
for me to choose from, the last of which is to restart x. None of the
options restores my display. The only way to get back in is to
restart the computer. I've noticed some suspicisous lines in the
  Xorg.*.log file:

(WW) intel(0): libpciaccess reported 0 rom size, guessing 64kB
  (WW) intel(0): DRI2 requires UXA
(EE) [drm] Could not set DRM device bus ID.
(EE) intel(0): [dri] DRIScreenInit failed. Disabling DRI.
(WW) intel(0): ESR is 0x00000001, instruction error
(WW) intel(0): Existing errors found in hardware state.

The computer and monitor are new, and work perfectly in Windows
Vista (64 bit edition). Restarting the computer puts everything back
to quality. I've also noticed that Ubuntu starts up slowly since
upgrading to 10.04, but not sure if it is a related issue. I allowed
the bug report to collect log info in hopes it would help lead to a
  solution.
