Title:
xorg uses too high resolution by default

Status in “xorg-server” package in Ubuntu:
  Expired

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: xorg

After I installed the nvidia drivers, Xorg used 1600x1200 at the next
reboot -- which was too high for my monitor.

I'm not sure what package to blame here. Should it automatically
detect what resolutions my monitor support?

Also, why does it use the highest possible solution? I don't want
  that.

I have worked around that problem for now by specifying a list of
resolutions in the xorg.conf file. However, that is not really a nice
solution because I would rather want to find all resolutions
automatically and only disallow everything >=1600x1200.
