Title:
  Security update 2:1.4.1~git20080131-1ubuntu9.3 breaks parenthese
  highlighting in Xemacs

Status in “xorg-server” package in Ubuntu:
  Expired

Bug description:
  After upgrading xserver-xorg-core from 2:1.4.1~git20080131-1ubuntu9.2
to 2:1.4.1~git20080131-1ubuntu9.3 the parentheses highlighting in
  Xemacs C-mode stopped working correctly.

I'm running on Hardy with the Xemacs itself running on a Debian etch
server with Xemacs 21.4.19-2 installed. The X commands are tunneled
through the ssh connection to my local machine (loging with "ssh -X
  servername").

What is happening: With the update installed it happens while editing
a buffer with C code that the highlighting fails in some way.

If you move the cursor behind a closing brace "}" the opening brace
should be highlighted. With the old version this is done here by
switching the background from white to light green with an approximate
frequency of 2Hz. The network traffic (100MBit Lan) is low (not to
  estimate).

If the update is installed the blinking of the opening brace is done
with a much higher frequency (white and green phases not really to
distinguish) and the network load goes up to around 600kByte/second.
If the closing brace is left with the cursor the network load drops
and it increases again if the closing brace is approached again.

This may only be inconvenient and a waste network bandwidth but the
real bug is that the opening brace vanishes (~50% probability) from
the displayed buffer area. Even scrolling the opening brace out of the
visible area and back doesn't make the opening brace come back being
  visible.

This renders Xemacs unusable for editing C code with this version of
  the X server.

Installing the old version 2:1.4.1~git20080131-1ubuntu9 fixed the
  problem.

I'm reporting this bug so many days delayed because I hoped some other
people would experience the same issue and I could switch to Lucid
soon. But under Lucid are some other bugs that discourage me from
  upgrading my working machine.
