Title:
Kubuntu freezes when desktop effects are enabled

Status in “xserver-xorg-video-ati” package in Ubuntu:
  Expired

Bug description:
I use Kubuntu 9.04 beta on an AMD64. lspci shows me the following line
  for my graphics hardware:

01:05.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon XPRESS
  200M 5955 (PCIE)

There is no explicit video driver setting in /etc/X11/xorg.conf. I
  think, radeon is used.

When desktop effects are enabled, the system often freezes, typically
when windows are opened. I can trigger these freezes quite reliably by
starting Quassel and opening the settings dialog. The system doesn‘t
respond to any keys anymore, not even to Ctrl + Alt + F1 (console
switch). However, the mouse pointer can still be moved. If I enable
XAA in /etc/X11/xorg.conf, the system not only freezes but the screen
  gets completely black.

If you need further information, please ask.
