Title:
radeon driver causes notebook fan to run always on at least medium
  speed

Status in “xserver-xorg-video-ati” package in Ubuntu:
  Expired

Bug description:
  I have a Sony VAIO YB3V1E/S with AMD E-450.

I did a fresh install of lubuntu 64bit 12.04 LTS on it, and i noticed
that with the default opensource driver, the fan would never go below
the medium speed (it seems to have three speeds: low, medium, and
  high).

With the proprietary fglrx driver form the repos, the fan normally
stays on the low speed when doing easy stuff like browsing the web,
  etc.

I am guessing that the opensource driver probably isn't throttling
down the gpu to save power (and heat).
