botup scren flashing endlesslly

Bug description:
using 11.10 from disc on new install on a Toshiba satellite 355 with
ati radean graphics card and amd turion 64 processor. bootup screen
flashes with bootup text page with superjmposed UBUNTU spash screen in
background orientation. I have to hit enter at least twice before
flashing stops and normal bootup proceeds to home screen is made
