I have confirmed that a full installation of 12.04 on a laptop (not just a live cd) also works fine with this headset. So I am baffled how to find out what is causing the issue on my specific machine/install. It may just be a waste of everyone's time to try and debug this issue but as a dev I hate to sweep things under the carpet as issues invariably return at some point.
