You have been subscribed to a public bug:
Up to Ubuntu 13.04, you could open gedit (or any other GTK-rendered
input field), and press Ctrl+Shift+u to enter unicode mode:
An underlined "u" would appear, and you can type a number followed by
space or enter to insert any unicode symbol.
For example, "Ctrl+Shift+u, 2200, enter" would insert the unicde FORALL
symbol (∀).
In Ubuntu 13.10, the same still works, but the underlined "u" and
inserted numbers are INVISIBLE, which is very confusing.
