Thank you for your bug report, those files are not ones for gedit but copies 
left on purposed (there is an option in the preferences that you enabled for

Closing, that's not a bug, if you don't want those files just don't turn the 
option on...

  gedit doesn't delete hidden backup / temporary files ending in  ~

Status in “gedit” package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
  gedit doesn't delete hidden temporary files, whose names end in ~ once
  you close a file and gedit doesn't need them. I find many of them
  sometimes, even from deleted text files.   I have ubuntu 12.04 with
  mate.
