Then after logging in via GDM (on the laptop kbd, not using the external kbd, FWIW), I connected the external monitor. As the attached screenshots show, on my virtual desktop #1, one rectangular slice of one window is displayed clear across the screen. I have no idea whether it is related to the use of the external monitor or not (I have used this external monitor many times since I upgraded to Lucid beta, and never seen this phenomenon before). Other desktops appear to be fine (though the misdrawn section from desktop #1 is still visible on them, it is just a ghost -- dragging over it will erase it there). On desktop #1, however, it's real. You can temporarily erase that weird block in the upper right by dragging over it, but it will come back as soon as the application (in this case Emacs) does redisplay draws.
