AMD Radeon HD 8450G flickering screen & other display issues

Bug description:
screen flickers, especially icons in the laucher bar, or when changing
workspaces.
GUI widgets(menu bars, text fields etc.) often disappear or become orange
blocks.
Corner of a app will sometimes be stretched on a sharp angle to one of the
corners of the monitor.
NOTE: there has been some improvement in this over the last couple
months. When initially installed, hiding the laucher bar would leave
a discoloured block along the left side of the screen, this is no
longer the case.
NOTE 2: Screen shots taken when these problems occur do not show the
aforementioned display issues.
