Title:
nouveau kernel driver fails to detect display attached via long VGA
  cable

Status in “xserver-xorg-video-nouveau” package in Ubuntu:
  Expired

Bug description:
nouveau kernel driver fails to detect display attached via long (10+ meters)
VGA cable (or via KVM device). Nothing shows up in dmesg (or in the X log) at
the default debugging level, when the display is connected via the long cable.
When a shorter VGA cable is used, the display is detected correctly.

The VGA cable is attached to a DP->VGA converter connected to the mini
  display port of the computer.

In OSX, the display is detected (and used) on both cables correctly,
therefore the physical connection to the display in itself is not
  responsible for the problem.

The NVIDIA Linux driver does detect the display on the long VGA cable,
but allows only lower than preferred resolution. The short cable works
correctly with the NVIDIA Linux driver.

xrandr shows after connecting the display via the long cable:
DP-1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)

I can not force the display on with:
        xrandr --newmode "[email protected]" 76.27 1024 1080 1192 1360 768 769
772 800 -HSync +Vsync
        xrandr --addmode DP-1 [email protected]
xrandr --output DP-1 --mode [email protected]
(this mode is valid for the display), I get:
  xrandr: Configure crtc 1 failed
  and in X.log:
