With the g84 on 1080 HDTV, apparently scaling, which I never tried before, is
working too:
$ xrandr --output DVI-I-1 --scale 1.2x1.2

Title:
  Panning in a virtual monitor is not possible after upgrade to Ubuntu
  11.10

Bug description:
  When I go for a virtual monitor by issuing command "xrandr --output
  LVDS1 --fb 1600x1200 --panning 1600x1200" on a monitor working at
  resolution 1024x768 (as I did before upgrading from Ubuntu 11.04 to
  Ubuntu 11.10), the WM bars on top and left side of the screen (in
  Unity) look like extending to the new area, but I cannot move the
  pointer to the new extra area and so I cannot pan. As far as I
  understood by reading around, this *could* be a bug in package "xorg-
  server" rather than in "xrandr" and *could* be related to the
  boundaries set for cursor position.
