Maybe a better advice would be to run synaptic with sudo -i synaptic

In addition, I have a problem that I believe is related to that. When I log on in the morning, and get my focus in the middle of a blank page, CTL-ALT-Tab does not always bring up a gnome-terminal any more. Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't.
