I have the exact same problem, but with 802.1x authentication. I've
included a part of a screenshot as illustration. Only viable solution is
to log out and back in..

Title:
Wireless authentication required dialog opens multiple times

Status in “network-manager-applet” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
When the wireless applet is disconnected from a wireless router that
is password-protected (WPA-2), the wireless authentication window
opens. After approximitely 5 mins, another one opens on top of the
first. This continues, and as the windows take about two minutes to
become responsive, they stack up quickly when you are away for a
  period of time.
