Seems like indeed support for that scanner only made it into the 1.0.24
release which did not make it in time for trusty.

If you are using the live CD you need to be sure about sufficient
permissions -> "maby adding to lp and scanner group could help"

Title:
  unsupported device - Samsung CLX-3160

Status in “sane-backends” package in Ubuntu:
  Triaged

Bug description:
  simple-scan doesn't detect my scanner even if I run it as a root.
  sane-find-scanner says: "found USB scanner (vendor=0x04e8 [Samsung],
  product=0x341c [Samsung CLX-3160 Series]) at libusb:002:004" and
  scanimage -L output is "No scanners were identified. If you were
  expecting something different, check that the scanner is plugged in,
  turned on and detected by the sane-find-scanner tool (if appropriate).
  ". My scanner is multifunction device CLX-3160FN and it was working on
  Ubuntu Natty if I used simple-scan as a root.
