Media key events duplicated or ignored

Bug description:
I loaded rhythmbox by clicking its name in the sound menu, and press
my multimedia keyboard play/pause button - this works fine and a song
starts playing. Pressing the play/pause button a second time also
works as expected, pausing the track.
However, pressing play/pause a third time doesn't start the song again, but
either:
1. does nothing, and the whole rhythmbox interface becomes unresponsive,
2. starts the song again, but starts another song as well - two songs
playing at the same time (or possibly the same song at different positions in
the song)
3. Skips several tracks, before maybe playing one.
