Title:
[hardy] [dell] [d820] Systemstart fails, gdmgreeter seems to hang

Status in The Somerville Project:
  Invalid
Status in “gdm” package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
Did a "sudo apt-get distr-upgrade" on my machine on April 3rd.
Afterwards the loginscreen does not come up completly.

Graphicsmode is started, screen is solid orange/brown, mouse/cursor is "busy"
and system hangs. *NO* sound is played (Do not know what comes first - menu or
sound).
Switching to other console is not possible.
Restart of Graphicsmode (Strg+Alt+Backspace) brings up textconsole, switching
console is now possible.
Switching to console by pressing Alt+F2 repeatedly allows login to console,
"top" says 100% CPU for "gdmgreeter" own by user "gdm".

  Any suggestions?
