unable to login to 9.10

Bug description:
After upgrade to 9.10 from 9.04 on my Acer Aspire One with netbook remix, I
can not log in the normal way.
At the gdm greeter menu, I get the following error message regardless which
user I try:
"error initiating conversation with authentication system - general failure".
When running 9.04 the system was set-up to log in directly to the
sytem (without giving user-id or passwd), but I remember that I had to
do some tweak to be able to start the wireless network without giving
the password.
I don't know if it is relevant, but I attach some of the messages in
the /var/log/auth.log
