I finally got ibus-pinyin working correctly: the following steps are all necessary and must be performed in order. 1: remove pinyin from the list of available engines 2: run the command: dconf reset -f /desktop/ibus/ 3: reboot the computer 4: re-enable ibus-pinyin.
