I have noticed that when the ethernet cable is unplugged, the icon does show up, but is non functional. All of the icons now seem to be merged into a single menu, so when you click on the nm icon, the single unified menu opens, but has no entries pertaining to nm.
I am guessing that this merged menu was a change in gnome-shell that network-manager had to change to accommodate, and ubuntu updated gnome- shell but not network-manager. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to network-manager in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1308291 Title: network-manager icon is gone in 14.04 Status in “gnome-shell” package in Ubuntu: New Status in “network-manager” package in Ubuntu: New Bug description: After upgrading to 14.04, the network-manger icon is no longer shown by gnome-shell.
