14.04 LTS- Where is the code for the drag and drop? If you drag and drop an URL from a browser to quickly make a shortcut it automatically makes a text file. However, you can make the URL an app shortcut on the desktop from the file menu. Seems like the behavior can be altered depending on where you are dragging text from; same as dragging an app from a folder to the desktop.
Seems also that if you drag an application from the desktop to the launcher it would turn into an launcher item.
