The bug appears in very similar manner on Kubuntu14.04 (Trusty Tahr). I tried all the steps proposed above and also in Bug987485, but without any positive result. The printer (in my case HP LaserJet 5L), connected via a prolific usb->parallel converter, prints at most one page (after switching off and on), then nothing. Printing the cups test page results in a stop after 38%. All the measure given in the different bug description (lpadmin -p HP_LaserJet_5L -o usb-unidir-default=true, lpadmin -p HP_LaserJet_5L -o usb-no-reattach-default=true in all permutations, removing usblp, stopping cups, cat-ing directly to /dev/usb/lp0) did not help. And - of course - the printer is switched on, and did work under ubuntu10.04 for years. Any help is highly appreciated, especially since the bug seems to persist for several years now. My feeling is, that it has to do with some disturbed bidirectional communication between printer and computer via the usb-adapter, but I cannot prove.
Regards Ferdi , -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to cups in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/923858 Title: Parallel printer over USB "usbfs: USBDEVFS_CONTROL failed cmd udev- configure-" Status in “cups” package in Ubuntu: New Bug description: I am trying to connect my parallel port printer (a Brother HL-1450 mono laser) to my new computer, which has no parallel port. I have bought a Dynamode Usb To Parallel Printer Cable Box 36pin (http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B000PIX8XS) and am so far unable to make my printer work. I have Ubuntu 11.10 installed, and have also tried running Ubuntu 10.04 on a VM, and sharing the USB device with the VM, and had no success that way either. When I click Add Printer in the CUPS web UI I don't see my printer listed. Under "Local Printers:" I just see "HP Printer (HPLIP)" and "HP Fax (HPLIP)". $ lsb_release -rd Description: Ubuntu 11.10 Release: 11.10 $ apt-cache policy cups cups: Installed: 1.5.0-8ubuntu7 Candidate: 1.5.0-8ubuntu7 Version table: *** 1.5.0-8ubuntu7 0 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status 1.5.0-8ubuntu6 0 500 http://gb.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ oneiric-updates/main amd64 Packages 1.5.0-8 0 500 http://gb.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ oneiric/main amd64 Packages I enabled the -proposed repository yesterday (2012-01-29) and updated, having seen comments by Till Kamppeter about various fixes to related- looking bugs. Before that I tried enabling Till's ppa. Neither of these seemed to fix the problem I was seeing. In both cases I rebooted to ensure I was running the right kernel etc. I have also tried modprobe -i usblp and then adding parallel:/dev/usblp0 in the CUPS web UI, and this didn't work either. When I plug in the USB cable connected to the printer (which is switched on) I get messages like this in dmesg: [72762.014344] usb 2-1.2: usbfs: USBDEVFS_CONTROL failed cmd udev- configure- rqt 161 rq 0 len 1024 ret -110 Please let me know if I can supply any other helpful information or if I missed something. Thanks for your help. ubuntu-bug cups won't work for me - I guess because I am using a package from -proposed? It says: "The problem cannot be reported: This is not a genuine Ubuntu package". Here are the details asked for on https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingPrintingProblems. I have followed the USB printer instructions - please let me know if I should follow the parallel port version because this is a parallel printer plugged in via USB. $ lsmod | grep usb usbhid 47198 1 hid_logitech hid 95463 2 hid_logitech,usbhid $ tail -f /var/log/syslog # Disconnect printer: Jan 30 17:26:51 ubuntu-i3 kernel: [72324.098990] usb 2-1.2: USB disconnect, device number 6 # Reconnect printer: Jan 30 17:27:08 ubuntu-i3 kernel: [72340.422909] usb 2-1.2: new full speed USB device number 11 using ehci_hcd Jan 30 17:27:08 ubuntu-i3 mtp-probe: checking bus 2, device 11: "/sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1d.0/usb2/2-1/2-1.2" Jan 30 17:27:08 ubuntu-i3 mtp-probe: bus: 2, device: 11 was not an MTP device Jan 30 17:27:08 ubuntu-i3 udev-configure-printer: add /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1d.0/usb2/2-1/2-1.2/2-1.2:1.0 Jan 30 17:27:08 ubuntu-i3 udev-configure-printer: device devpath is /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1d.0/usb2/2-1/2-1.2 Jan 30 17:27:08 ubuntu-i3 udev-configure-printer: Device vendor/product is 067B:2305 Jan 30 17:27:13 ubuntu-i3 udev-configure-printer: Failed to fetch Device ID Jan 30 17:27:13 ubuntu-i3 kernel: [72345.597761] usb 2-1.2: usbfs: USBDEVFS_CONTROL failed cmd udev-configure- rqt 161 rq 0 len 1024 ret -110 Jan 30 17:27:18 ubuntu-i3 udev-configure-printer: Failed to fetch Device ID Jan 30 17:27:18 ubuntu-i3 kernel: [72350.596748] usb 2-1.2: usbfs: USBDEVFS_CONTROL failed cmd udev-configure- rqt 161 rq 0 len 1024 ret -110 $ lsusb | grep Parallel Bus 002 Device 011: ID 067b:2305 Prolific Technology, Inc.
