I was also experiencing this problem. After some googling I found a thread that
specifies this to be an Nuvou drivers issue (or rather missing Nvidia drivers).
To correct the problem install the nvidia drivers. You can do this on the login
screen press ctrl+alt+F2, which will bring you to a TTY interface. Login there
and issue
sudo apt-get install nvidia-current
sudu reboot (or hard rebot as I had to do one).

Once you restart the issue should be mitigated. However, the problem
with the drivers should still be investigated. I am not sure what logs I
can provide but I have taken a snapshot of all of them. I am attaching
the faulty Xorg logs

Title:
  Ubuntu 14.04 freezes on login

Status in “xserver-xorg-video-nouveau” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
I recently upgraded my Xubuntu installation to 14.04. After doing so,
I have been unable to use my system. It will boot fine, load up my
home screen, and after a few minutes, will freeze. Nothing can be
done, no commands give any response. I can sometimes move the mouse
around, but cannot click on anything or make any changes to the
system. The only option I have is to use the power button to force it
  to turn off.

My first thought is that it is maybe a graphics card issue, that
somehow when updating, it turned off the third-party packages to run
NVIDIA. However, since it freezes so soon (and sooner every time you
boot), it is almost impossible to diagnose the issue.

  Help?
