I had the same problem with my Dell Vostro 1510 laptop (dual booted with Widows Vista at the moment). It didn't affect the upgrade on my Dell Optiplex GX520 where it has been working fine. I used a USB download to do the original upgrades on both and I was a bit stunned when the laptop failed to log in the next day. I should add I upgraded the desktop first.
I needed to use the laptop so I reinstalled Ubuntu 12.04.3 from the disk I had and carried on using that for a few days but last Monday I decided to try upgrading again, this time doing it on-line with the terminal mode command line "update-manager -d" which offered the upgrade. (Just using the Software Updater doesn't offer the upgrade option from 12.04 until 14.04.1 is released.) It worked and the laoptop has been in use daily since without a recurance of the problem. I had though the USB may somehow been corrupted but I'm not so sure now. I will keep using this and monitoring things to see if there is anything I can add. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to gksu in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1311511 Title: After upgrading to Ubuntu 14.04 can't login to GUI Status in “gksu” package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: I have upgraded two Dell system to to 14.04 and I was able to login once after the upgrade. For as long as I did not log out of the GUI everything was working great. After rebooting, any attempt to login resulted in a flash and an immediate "invalid username/password" response. I have tried my admin account, guest, as well as creating a new account. All accounts worked fine via terminal (CTRL + ALT + F) login. Any help greatly appreciated !
