Risk to taking this patch (and alternatives if risky): It's not an entirely trivial change, but getting it onto beta ASAP should give us the best chance of finding any regressions.
One alternative is to uplift bug 989858 instead, but that has already had a few regressions and we'd need to uplift the whole set of fixes. We could also just backout and live with bug 740325.
