I found that /etc/udev/rules.d/45-libgphoto2.rules was missing. I tried reinstalling libgphoto2-2 but the file was not installed (would this have been installed with a different package?). Downloaded extra copy from http://webs.ono.com/jesusvpct/45-libgphoto2.rules and the camera now mounts fine.
