Public bug reported:

HP Pavilion Touch-screen Laptop...

Technically, Xorg isn't completely freezing. It will just suddenly
start losing mouse events. I normally use the Synaptics touchpad and it
seems these have a history of problems. Once I start losing events, I
usually can't click on anything, or I'll move the mouse and get the
response a few events later. This has a touch-screen too, and it will
have the same problem. It's unclear if the events are being lost or
delayed or what. However, the system becomes unusable and I end up
switching to a text console and killing Xorg (and losing everything I
was doing). Xorg restarts and then it will work fine for hours.

It would seem that moving windows around in the Workspace Switcher while
its showing the reduced-size views will trigger this bug the fastest.
I usually see some Firmware errors when I switch consoles ...

[10343.203992] [Firmware Bug]: cpu 0, try to use APIC500 (LVT offset 0) for
vector 0xf9, but the register is already in use for vector 0x400 on another cpu
[10343.203994] [Firmware Bug]: cpu 0, failed to setup threshold interrupt for
bank 4, block 1 (MSRC0000408=0xc000000001000000)

Dmesg also says ...
[ 0.233872] [Firmware Info]: CPU: Re-enabling disabled Topology Extensions
Support
[ 0.268901] [Firmware Bug]: ACPI: BIOS _OSI(Linux) query ignored
[ 1.050054] acpi PNP0A08:00: [Firmware Info]: MMCONFIG for domain 0000 [bus
00-3f] only partially covers this bridge

However, its possible that none of this is related. I checked the
Changelog for the latest kernel, and the synaptics driver has a few bug
fixes (as does my wireless driver). However, I don't know what patches
ubuntu puts onto the stock kernel, so I'll wait for further instructions
before trying the 3.14 kernel.
