Have the same issue but only started recently, possibly after upgrading Ubuntu to 14.04. Happens every time when trying to using the short keys for changing viewport (ie Ctrl-Alt-ArrowKeys). However changing viewport using the expo key or mouse (shows HUD with all viewports), it switches viewports fine and does not crash. I ran compiz in gdb following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingCompiz under advanced debugging and got an error log. note: I had to run gdb in screen and resuming it in different tty terminal (ex Ctrl-Alt-F1) to finish debugging since desktop became unusable after crashing.
