Same problem with Acer Aspire 5100 and Ubuntu 14.04.
Screen flickers after suspend and resume. Hibernate works. graphics card
not recognized and resolutions wrong if nomodeset used.

Bug description:
Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-ati
After resuming from suspend to RAM, X display flickers badly and
apparently at random ; image is visible and computer "usable" - not
hung - but always badly flickering until reboot. Shifting back and
forth to text console then to X doesn't help X. This happened with
ati_drv but, in the old days where fglrx did manage this card (until
8.10 Intrepid if I remember well), it was OK. This problem appeared as
soon as I had to shift to ati_drv for «fglrx not supporting "old"
cards in new Xorg anymore» :-(
WORKAROUND: After resuming from hibernate to disk, display is OK.
