Same problem on Xubuntu 12.10 setup with ZTE MF112 3G modem as the only
means of communication. Really painful, because I have to manually
restart the modemmanager everytime after it fails. And it fails fairly
often, especially on heavy load.

  I do not use modemmanager, so it settings should be default.
