To whom it may concern:
I am reporting this issue as a bug but I believe it to be more of a mistake (in
my humble opinion).
After a quick scan in Ubuntu forums and FAQ I believe I am not the first one to
report the issue and thus I will just tell you what the problem is and why I
think it should be addressed. Tough I can see a few possible solutions I will
leave that up to you.
The problem is that anyone that migrates from Windows (or Mac) to Ubuntu (i.e.
90%+ of computer users) and specially the Portuguese language users which is
the official language in 10 countries and spoken in 34 (roughly 10% of the
world’s population) won’t be able to use the US International keyboard with
dead keys to type “ç”. In fact, I am now writing to you from my Windows
partition because I am still trying to find a solution that does not involve
editing files and doing it all over again whenever I update the kernel.
Why on earth would you want to change the keyboard configuration to an acute c?
Was this a Croatian programmer decision or did you really think it over? You
have a great operating system but this is the sort of thing that annoys a lot
of people and makes them stay comfortably numb with other operating systems.
The historical reason for Portuguese speakers/writers use of US International
keyboard with dead keys it that Portugal itself has as much population living
outside the country and thus these people by computers locally with US
keyboard, mine, for instance, was bought in Hong Kong. I guess the same happens
with all other Portuguese speaking countries and it is an arrangement that
works for both users and computer companies and retailers that only have to
keep inventories of computers with US International keyboards, it is sort of a
one solution fits all, including French and Spanish, two other languages also
widely spoken.
