Official support for Ubuntu 9.10 "Karmic Koala" has ended. If this is
still occurring on Ubuntu 14.04 "Trusty Tahr", try installing
gstreamer1.0-libav and gstreamer1.0-plugins-bad and gstreamer1.0
-plugins-ugly. If the problem persists after that, please file a new
bug report.

Bug description:
I have a 1.5TB drive with videos stored from a Humax 9200. It would
only open in Movie Player. No sound is heard (despite all setting up
high and other PC sounds as usual. Oddly a running audio commentary
followed the action occasionally (on My Name is earl). No subtitles
were turned on. Weird!
