The same bug exists on Nemo (should there be different bug report?)
It is less troublesome when you don't set Nemo as handling also your desktop, 
because closing Nemo correctly frees the memory.

Title:
  nautilus don't liberate the memory

Status in “nautilus” package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
  nautilus (3.10.1-0ubuntu8,3.10.1-0ubuntu9.1)
  don't liberate then memory
  I use Ctrl ++ to increase the images
  exemple
  directory Rep:: 616 photos (2,1 Gio)
  open Nautilus on this directory Rep , Ctrl +++++++ , close nautilus
  memory occuped by nautilus : 527Mio
  ......
  I redo this (five times)
  open Nautilus on this directory Rep , Ctrl +++++++ close nautilus
  memory occuped by nautilus : 2,8Gio
  the six time : nautilus is killed by the system ( because memory occuped more 
80% )
