Additional data point: this problem seems to be restricted to selection - holding down (for example) a letter key, the display always updates and I see each character appear one by one; when selecting this doesn't happen and I only see the new selection when I release the arrow key.

This makes selecting by keyboard very hard as it's impossible to tell how much has been selected. Though this sounds like the behavior expected when 'redisplay-dont- pause' is nil, that variable is set to 't' (and changing it has no effect). This does not happen with other text editors (e.g. gnome-text-editor), and did not happen prior to upgrading (from Precise/emacs21). The X server is Xming 7.5.0.62 on Windows .
