Additional data point: this problem seems to be restricted to selection
- holding down (for example) a letter key, the display always updates
and I see each character appear one by one; when selecting this doesn't
happen and I only see the new selection when I release the arrow key.

Title:
Display not updated when shift-selecting with autorepeat

Status in “emacs23” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:

When using shift selection mode (i.e. shift-select-mode set to 't'), if I
hold down shift and an arrow key to select a long range (in any direction), the
display only updates to show the selection for the first keypress, and after
that does not update to reflect the selection until the arrow key is released.
This makes selecting by keyboard very hard as it's impossible to tell how much
has been selected.

Though this sounds like the behavior expected when 'redisplay-dont-
pause' is nil, that variable is set to 't' (and changing it has no
  effect).

This does not happen with other text editors (e.g. gnome-text-editor),
and did not happen prior to upgrading (from Precise/emacs21).

The X server is Xming 7.5.0.62 on Windows .
