This bug affects me too. It's not only the To: field, which becomes inaccessible after composing one email, it's the text-field as well. It not only seems to be not a text field, I really cannot write into it. I use thunderbird 31.1.1 on ubuntu 14.04. With this bug thunderbird is unusable.
