Disabling some other plugins like multi edit, latex , join-split lines, synctex etc solved the problem of crash/unexpected closure of gedit--seems like these newly enabled/installed plugins were causing the problem and may not be compatible with each other or buggy. There needs to be some sort of rating for them--whether they are alpha, beta or fully tested. Zeitgeist plugin can now be enabled/disabled without crashing/unexpected closure of the gedit application

While enabling the latex plugin in edit->preferences and trying to disable the zeitgeist plugin, gedit closed unexpectedly. The problem was repeated when i again opened gedit and attempted to disable the zeitgeist plugin Also gedit file menu does not remember any of the last opened files-- so the zeitgeist plugin is of no use to me even when it is enabled.
