Same issue for my Logitech USB headset. The problem appeared in 14.04 LTS. Before that release the feature worked by accident or by specification :-)
Now, after plugging in USB headset to answer skype, I have to go to audio preference and change 2 settings for Audio Input / recording devices and for playback devices. See attached pictures.
