Apologies, this was a bug in pdftops on our print server, triggered
because evince (unlike okular and xpdf) sends PDF to the print server.

Title:
evince prints transparent parts of images in PDFs as black
Status in “evince” package in Ubuntu:
Invalid
Bug description:
Ubuntu 14.04.1
evince version 3.10.3-0ubuntu10.1
If a PDF contains an image with a transparent background, evince prints the
transparent parts of
that image as black.
I attach a test case, generated by doodling in the gimp, exporting as PNG,
and then
convert test.png test.pdf
Printing test.pdf from evince will show a black background to the image.
Printing test.pdf from okular or xpdf produces a page with a white (paper)
background.
