Following workaround disables the evince-thumbnailer for dvi files: Open the dconf editor, navigate to "org.gnome.desktop.thumbnailers" and set the key "disable" to "['application/x-dvi']".

The DVI is output from latex. Very annoying as evince-thumbnailer is triggered automatically in the background every time the DVI file changes.
